Total Balance vs. Available Balance

Modified on Wed, May 28 at 12:51 PM

Banks report two balances for each of your accounts: Total Balance and Available Balance.

  • The Total Balance is the full amount of money in a bank account, including both cleared and pending transactions.
  • The Available Balance is the amount of money that is available to be withdrawn. This may exclude pending transactions or funds that are subject to a bank hold.

If these balances are different, Max will list both the Total Balance and the Available Balance on your Max Dashboard. Max takes into account both your Total and Available balances in calculating and proposing your optimization to help prevent overdrafts.

For Max Checking Accounts:

Funds deposited into Max Checking may be subject to an initial bank hold of up to 10 business days. During this period, the funds that are being held will be listed as part of your Total Balance, but not the Available Balance. Once the bank hold is lifted, the funds will become available. If you have an optimization scheduled any funds in excess of your Target Balance will be moved to your Optimized Savings.
